25 lakh people decreased plastic bag usage by approx 70 lakhs over the course of 7 days. Swachh Survekshan, conducted by MoHUA since 2016, is the world’s largest urban sanitation and cleanliness survey.

The primary goal of Swachh Survekshans is to encourage large-scale citizen participation and create awareness amongst all sections of society about the importance of working together towards making towns and cities better places to reside in.

In 2019, we partnered with MoHUA to spread the word about Swachh Survekshan and reach the citizens of the nation. Shoppers worldwide are using approximately 500 billion single-use plastic bags per year. This translates to about a million bags every minute across the globe, or 150 bags a year for every person on earth. And the number is rising.

The idea behind #JholaChallenge was to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags and get people to opt for cloth bags aka ‘Jhola’ instead. Using single-use plastic bags is a modern-day crime and each one of us is the culprit.

The Jhola Challenge was introduced with the hope to reduce this consumption and triggering a positive change. But the real challenge was making sure that it was adopted by citizens all over the country.

Through social media channels, millions of Indians got encouraged to ditch plastic bags for cloth bags.
All they had to do was:
1. Sign up using a link and activate the 'Jhola Mode.' 2. After that upload a selfie with a jhola to earn 3 Jhola Points. 3. Nominate 5 friends to join you in the Jhola Challenge.
